The Watermelon vs. the Pumpkin

It was hot. The dirt was dry, just like the watermelon liked it. Last night it rained so the watermelon drank it all up and turned red, with big black seeds inside.

Next to the watermelon was a pumpkin, bright orange and much more proud than the watermelon because of its pretty orange color. At Halloween it would be everyone’s favorite.

Ha! said the watermelon. You look great on the outside, but on the inside you’re ugly, gooey, and even a little smelly. You have long stringy things and ugly seeds all mooshed together.

“Well,” said the pumpkin. At halloween my kids come and pick me up, and carve a beautiful face and sometimes even light a candle on my inside, and I have a wonderful face.

The watermelon thought for a moment and imagined that pumpkin. That pumpkin would be an ugly face with teeth and pointy eyes.

The pumpkin knew what Mr. watermelon was thinking.

He said I’m not ugly. I’m SCARY. You’re just a big smooth fruit that looks like a green rock that kids eat, and they spit out your seeds.

Bad news. Big pumpkin forgot one thing. Mr. Watermelon was LOVED by all the kids. they even had a birthday party, and opened up Mr. Watermelon to find a beautiful, red, juicy, tasty, yummy watermelon. All the kids laughed and ate till their stomachs were full of watermelon juice.

Big Pumpkin was sad. Mr. Watermelon was gone. Maybe he even missed the watermelon. That big juicy guy was gone.

Mr. Watermelon was sad too. He was all eaten. But he’d be back next year, since one of the seeds fell on the ground next to Big pumpkin, ready to grow into a big juicy watermelon next year.

A little boy came over to the pumpkin, sat down next to him, and said that at Halloween he–Big Pumpkin– would be his favorite pumpkin, and would he please grow big and round to make his halloween the best ever?

So the pumpkin smiled, and knew that before winter came both he and Mr. watermelon woud make all kids happy.

And next year both Big Pumpkin and Mr. Watermelon would be back, making all the kids happy from summer until fall.
They’d be best friends next year.

Love always…

1 Corinthians 13

Love is patient, love is kind.

It does not or is not:

  • Envy
  • Boast
  • Proud
  • Rude
  • Self-seeking
  • Easily angered
  • Keep record of wrongs
  • Delight in evil

It does:

  • Rejoices in the truth
  • Always protects
  • Always trusts
  • Always hopes
  • Always perseveres
  • Never fails

The older I get the more aware I am of my self righteousness. I can check every one in the top list, and none in the bottom list. “Never”, and “always” are words I should remember. I am so glad I broke these down into lists.

Dear God, thank you for humbling me and showing me with clarity what you expect of me. I see why being positive is actually being loving. Thank you for loving me. This means you always hope for me, always rejoice when I am truthful; always love me. Thank you for loving me and for loving my wife. Thank you, Amen.

Santa is not God

Titus 2: 13

…while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us….

As a boy my young brother and I would try to stay awake all night on Christmas Eve. During the prior month we had made a short list of things we’d like for Christmas, then on Christmas Eve go on the back porch with our father and light the paper lists with a match, in eager hope that Santa would read our smokey list and bring those goodies early the next morning. After vowing to stay up all night, we would fall asleep in 30 minutes. Today I ask God to help me see the amazing gift he has already prepared for me and to eagerly await the gift of eternal life.

Dear God, help me to picture your Gift and to meditate on the glory you will reveal to me. Help me to think beyond my daily pressures and ponder the glory to be revealed to me. Come, oh God in your glory and touch my mind so that I think about your gift and not about my projects my money my desires, for these are shadows I grasp for. Amen

Facebook description for King Zedekiah

Zedekiah

Status: Married. Probably to an Egyptian debutante. (Besides the numerous concubines, of course who aren’t listed in his facebook page)

Education: Jerusalem Academy for Kings. Charter school for wealthy blue bloods. Sports: Chariot races. In fact, the school’s mascot was a chariot and the team name was “The Charioteers”.

Studied: The arts, languages, history, math, and things that kings study.

Lived in: Jerusalem. Born @618BC.

Activities and interests: Most likely worshipping other gods, doing whatever he wanted to as a spoiled rich king with power like excessive drinking, riding horses, chariot races, partying and revelry.

Occupation: King for about 10 years, beginning at age twenty one. He succeeded his nephew, Jeconiah, who was overthrown as king after a reign of only three months and ten days. Basically Zedekiah seems to be a puppet king installed by King Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon. Died @587.

Photo: Eyes poked out by King Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon. Zedekiah revolted against Babylon, and entered into an alliance with Pharaoh Hophra of Egypt. Nebuchadnezzar began a siege of Jerusalem in January of 589 BC. During this siege, which lasted about thirty months, “every worst woe befell the city, which drank the cup of God’s fury to the dregs”.

Friends: Lots of Egyptians. Maybe a few family friends in Jerusalem or from those who ingratiated themselves to him in hopes of finding favor from a king.

He was a probably a facebook friend of Jeremiah, the prophet of the jews, but later “de-friended” because he ignored Jeremiah’s advise and counsel and continued to quote “do evil in the sight of the Lord”.
